General description

Plakophilin-2 (PKP2) is a member of the Armadillo/β-catenin family. It contains eight ARM repeats and can exist in two slice isoforms (2a and 2b). Plakophilin-2 is highly abundant in simple and stratified epithelial cells; but is also expressed in non-epithelial cells, such as the myocardium and lymph node follicles. In epithelial cells, it is localized to desmosomal plaques and plays an important role in cell-cell adhesion processes. Plakophilin-2 also maintains the cell-cell junctions of cardiac tissue, and is essential for proper cardiac function. Mutations in the plakophilin-2 gene cause arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy 9, a condition characterized by partial breakdown of the myocardium of the right ventricle, electrical instability, and sudden death. Plakophilin-2 has also been implicated in the development of cancer.

Immunogen

MBP-tagged recombinant protein corresponding to human Plakophilin-2.
